10 Things to Know About LED Outdoor Lighting Before You Buy

Let’s take a moment to separate fact from fiction. LED outdoor lighting is worth buying, but the claims printed on the packaging aren’t promises. Heat and water decide how long a fixture survives in a northwest Houston yard.

August highs here average around 95 degrees, and a normal year brings close to 50 inches of rain across roughly 100 rainy days. Add a summer UV index near 7 and humidity in the mid-70s. Anything you set in a bed has to live through all of it, and cheap hardware doesn’t.

What a 50,000 Hour Rating Actually Promises

It promises nothing about burning out. That figure is a lumen maintenance number, and the shorthand for it is L70. It marks the point where a light source has faded to 70 percent of the output it started with. The Department of Energy and the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance settled on that definition in 2010, and the whole trade quotes it now.

So a diode doesn’t die on schedule. It just gets dimmer every year until the uplights look tired and nobody can say when it happened.

Why Big Box Advice Falls Apart Here

Most LED marketing was written for a hallway ceiling. Indoors there’s no rain, no UV, and no soil moving under the base. A yard in Hockley or Cypress hands a fixture all three at once, plus a wet stretch that runs May through October.

Water intrusion at connectors and sockets is the number one killer of a low voltage system in this part of Texas. The diode is rarely what failed. A wet splice usually is.

Heat Is What Kills an Outdoor LED

An LED doesn’t radiate heat forward the way a halogen lamp does. It dumps that heat backward into its own body instead. The industry guidance behind the L70 standard says it plainly. Half or more of the input energy becomes heat that has to be conducted away from the diodes.

Heat is what decides how long an outdoor LED lasts in this climate. That’s why the casting behind the lens matters more than the chip in front of it. A heavy cast body pulls heat out and hands it to the air. A thin stamped shell holds it in, and the diode cooks slowly through eight Texas summers.

What a Texas Yard Does to Cheap Fixtures

You can usually read a system’s quality from the driveway at night. Gumbo clay in Cypress swells and shrinks, so stakes heel over and aim drifts. Sandy loam over clay in Hockley and Tomball stays soggy, so stakes sink and tilt.

Signs the LEDs in Your Beds Were the Budget Kind

  • Lenses gone yellow or milky on the south-facing side of the house
  • Two uplights in the same bed reading noticeably different colors after dark
  • Rust weeping from a painted housing where the stake collar meets the body
  • Green foliage that looks gray and tired under the beam
  • Flicker or buzz for a few seconds when the timer kicks the system on
  • Water beaded inside a lens after a wet week in June
  • A run that gets dimmer with every fixture toward the far end
  • Wire nuts buried bare in the mulch instead of sealed waterproof connectors
  • Red brick that reads brown and washed out at night

Yellowed lenses are the giveaway we trust most. Polycarbonate yellows because UV breaks the surface down into compounds that absorb blue light. The damage stays in a paper-thin surface layer, but it’s permanent, and it steals output from a diode that’s still perfectly healthy.

Three Fixture Bodies and How They Age

  • Solid brass. Darkens to a brown patina and keeps going. Humidity doesn’t rust it and UV doesn’t chalk it.
  • Copper. Turns green over the years while staying sound underneath. It’s a favorite for path lights and it ages honestly on a wet Gulf Coast lot.
  • Painted aluminum and composite. Cheapest on day one. First to fade, chalk, and crack where the sun hits hardest.

Brass and copper cost more up front and stop costing you after that. That’s the entire argument, and it’s the one homeowners here usually wish they’d heard sooner.

  • Rated life is a dimming number. L70 means output has dropped to 70 percent of first day levels. The fixture usually still works.
  • The heat sink matters more than the diode. Half or more of the power going in turns into heat, and the body has to move it out.
  • Fixture metal is the corrosion barrier. Solid brass and copper shrug off 95 degree afternoons and mid-70s humidity. Painted aluminum blisters first at the stake collar.
  • IP ratings describe the fixture, not the splice. An IP number rates how well a sealed body keeps dust and water out. IP65 handles low-pressure water jets, and IP67 handles a short dunk in about a meter of water.
  • CRI tells you whether brick and bark look right. The color rendering index scores how true colors look under a lamp compared with a reference light. The common score averages eight test colors on a 0 to 100 scale. Low numbers make mulch read gray.
  • Kelvin sets the mood before brightness does. Kelvin measures how warm or cool white light looks, and lower numbers look warmer. Warm light flatters stone, stucco, and bark. Our piece on warm white or cool white walks through the tradeoff.
  • Binning explains mismatched color. Factories sort diodes into color bins, and a loose bin lets two fixtures with the same Kelvin label look different side by side. Tighter bins cost more and match better.
  • LEDs rewrite your voltage drop math. Voltage drop is the fade that dims fixtures at the far end of a long wire run. A 4 watt LED replacing a 35 watt halogen pulls close to 90 percent less current, so runs hold their voltage.
  • Your old transformer is probably oversized now. The transformer is the box that steps house power down to 12 volts. Installers load one to about 80 percent of its rating, and a halogen-era unit can end up loafing at a fraction of that.
  • Retrofit lamps and integrated fixtures each have a catch. An MR16 drop-in, the small two-pin lamp most halogen fixtures take, lets you swap a bulb instead of a whole fixture. An integrated LED seals better but goes in the trash whole.

Glare, Blue Light, and the Property Line

Bright is easy. Comfortable is hard. DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society adopted five principles for responsible outdoor lighting. Two of them settle most neighbor complaints. Direct light so it falls only where it’s needed, and hold blue-violet light to the least amount needed.

That’s a bigger deal than it sounds. Blue-rich white light scatters harder, throws more glare, and reads as harsh on an aging eye. It also carries farther across a property line, which is exactly the thing covenant standards in master-planned communities here are written to prevent.

Aim the fixture first, then decide whether you need more light. Nine times out of ten you don’t.

Converting a Halogen System Without Starting Over

A lot of yards in Fairfield, Coles Crossing, and the older Woodlands villages already have wire in the ground that’s twenty years old and perfectly usable. The buried cable, the sleeves under the walk, the trench routing, all of it can stay. An LED landscape lighting conversion reuses that buried work and changes what sits on top of it.

Two things get checked during any swap. The first is every connector, since a halogen-era splice that’s been wet for a decade won’t survive being disturbed. The second is the transformer, because a unit sized for 300 watts of halogen may now be feeding 40 watts of LED.

Start With What’s Already in the Ground

If half your yard is dark, start at the transformer and the first splice on the failing run. Lights that come on but look bad are usually a color and aim problem. Wattage isn’t usually the culprit. Yellowed lenses and pitted housings mean the fixtures are spent, and rewiring around them is wasted money.
